Amun was the local god of Thebes, and grew in influence and importance over many years while Thebes was the capital during the 12th - 18th Dynasties. So great was Amun's power that his temple at Karnak became the largest religious edifice ever built. Ever. Anywhere. As Amun grew in importance he collected attributes from other gods, notably Min. Amun's flat crown with two tall ostrich plumes was taken from Min, and Amun is often shown ithyphallic, like Min. The sun god Ra was the supreme source of power, so in the ultimate enhancement of Amun he became combined with Ra as the deity Amun-Re.
