Walking plush baboon is 13 inches tall, 18 inches long, with a 16 inch tail. She has an internal rod armaature to maintain good posture. Baboons have long dog-like muzzles, close-set eyes under a low brow-ridge, and heavy fur except on their muzzle. Male hamadryas baboons have a white mane, so this plush baboon is a female or juvenile. Hansa's usual wonderful facial detailing gives this baboon a very solemn appearance.

There are five species of baboon in genus Papio, with some debate about the exact separation of species and sub-species. The type species and most common baboon is the Hamadryas, named for mytical Greek wood nymphs. (One sometimes wonders about the imaginations of 18th-century natural philosophers.) Baboons have few predators except man and leopards, and they are awfully tough prey for a leopard. Large males will yawn at leopards to show their teeth and generally chase the leopard away. So much for wood nymphs.

The Hamadryas Baboon is also called the Sacred Baboon because it was a sacred animal to the ancient Egyptians. Baboons were associated with the Egyptian god Thoth, and the god Babi or Baba was represented as a baboon. The name "baboon" probably came from "Baba". Baba was a pre-Dynastic god of the dead and sort of a super-alpha male baboon.

Hansa produce an assortment of quality plush animal figures designed to capture each animal's beauty and character. Hansa use high-quality synthetic plush, often custom produced for their specific requirements of color, pattern and texture. The Hansa designers use complex cutting patterns with as many different plush variations as needed to get the right appearance for their animals. The fabrics are hand-cut to match each animal's design. Eyes, noses and paws are individually sewn to give each animal its realistic and individual appearance. Many of the animals get air-brushed accents to highlight body or facial details. Then the animals are hand-stuffed creating the unique poses and looks that are distinctively Hansa.

Hansa also make a series of life-size large animal plush which include a structural metal frame that is light-weight but capable of being "ridden" by children and even adults up to 250 pounds in weight. Stuffe & Nonsense cannot stock the large animals, but you can check their full collection at the Hansa Toys USA web site. If you see something interesting there, contact us and we can get it for you.
