This piece is copied from an Anubis shrine found in the tomb of Tutankhamun. The original is about 3 feet long, made of heavily gessoed wood painted and gold leafed. The Anubis figure had eyes of alabaster with obsidian pupils, and toenails of silver. Although the shrine has sledge runners as though meant to be towed, the original was equipped with long poles so it could be carried by bearers. It was found draped with a fine linen shawl and a floral collar. Linen shawls were a common decoration on figures of Anubis as they represent the linen wrappings of mummies, a process created by and overseen by Anubis. Inscriptions on the shrine identify Anubis as "he who protects the secrets".
