The human-headed bird represents the ba of the deceased. The bird's feet grasp two shem, symbols of eternity. Copied from a ba figure found in the mummy wrappings of Tutankhamun. Original now in the Cairo Museum. The ba and the ka were held to be two elements of the human spirit, rather like the id and the ego. The ba took the form of a bird, flying free after death, and had to be gently lured back to rejoin the ka in the body for a successful transition to the after-life.
