Bastet Canopic Jar

This lovely ceramic jar has a lid in the shape of Bastet's head. The side of the jar has a label of Hathor on a throne and a procession of other Egyptian gods. Glazed ceramic jar is 9 inches tall and 5 inches in diameter. (Not safe for food.)

One normally thinks of a canopic jar as one of the four funerary jars used to store internal organs of the deceased during mummification. Actually the term originally described ceramic jars with lids in the form of human heads, which were found in great numbers around the town of Canopus where they were used in ceremonies honoring Osiris. Early Egyptologists called the jars "canopic" and the term was later extended to the funerary containers. So the Bastet ceramic jar is "canopic" because the lid is modelled in the form of a head. We do have replicas of the funerary canopic jars.

Stuffe & Nonsense Egyptian figurines and collectibles are modern manufactured decorative objects, made in the style of ancient Egyptian artifacts.
