Block Statue of Hor

A block statue shows Hor, priest of Montu, son of Ankhkhonsu. Painted cold-cast resin figurine is 3 inches tall. Carving on the statue lists Hor's titles and genealogy. The original of this figure was a memorial figure carved of schist, about 2 feet high, found by Lagrain in the courtyard of the cachette at the temple of Amun at Karnak. Block statues were popular for memorial carvings because they provide so much surface for carving text. The original of Hor's block statue is dated to the 25th Dynasty (770-712 BCE).

Hor was a priest of Montu, who was a falcon-headed sun god of Armant in Upper Egypt. Montu became a principal god of Thebes when Pharaoh Montuhotep established his capital there at the beginning of the Middle Kingdom (11th Dynasty), but Montu was later displaced by the growing influence of Amun. As Amun became the primary deity, Montu became a war god and an important temple of Montu remained at Karnak. The 25th Dynasty was a Nubian dynasty, and art of the time was studiously archaic in style, possibly to emphasize apparent continuity with previous dynasties.
