Hippopotamus in Faience Finish

The hippopotamus was a dangerous and greatly feared animal in ancient Egypt, but this friendly smiling hippo is decorated with birds and lotus flowers. In this form the hippo represents the life-giving force of the river. The decorated hippopotamus may also have been intended to propitiate the dangerous forces of chaos. Faience figurines of this form decorated with river plants evoking the marshes from whence life arose, mostly Middle Kingdom, were often found near Karnak and Luxor (Thebes). Painted cold-casat resin figurine is 2 inches tall, 3.5 inches long, also available in bronze finish.

Stuffe & Nonsense Egyptian figurines and collectibles are modern manufactured decorative objects, made in the style of ancient Egyptian artifacts.
