Isis Jewelry Box

Lidded box decorated with two protective winged figures of Isis on top. The box is 5 inches long and 7 inches tall.

Isis and Nephthys (image from The Gold of Tutankhamen by Mallakh and Brackman
Yes, it does look a lot like the "Ark of the Covenant" prop from the Indiana Jones movie, doesn't it? Amazing coincidence! This jewelry box is not a copy of an actual Egyptian antique, but the position of the goddess with her spread wings is copied from wall paintings and other material. Through her magic, Isis could form large feathered wings at will. Isis's spread wings were a sign of protection frequently applied to sarcophagi and other funerary equipment. It was in the winged form of a kite (a raptor) that Isis mated with Osiris and became pregnant with Horus. The picture on the right shows Isis and her sister Nephthys in a pose similar to the figures on the jewelry box. This embossed panel is from the shrines holding Tutankhamun's sarcophagus.

Stuffe & Nonsense Egyptian figurines and collectibles are modern manufactured decorative objects, made in the style of ancient Egyptian artifacts.
