The original of this figure is a life-size diorite sculpture now in the Cairo Museum. Khafre wears the nemes headdress allowed only for pharaoh. Horus holds his wings protectively around pharaoh's head. The statue was discovered by Mariette about 1860 in Khafre's valley temple near the Sphinx. It was greatly damaged and has been substantially restored. Khafre ruled during the 4th dynasty, 2520-2494 BCE.
