Narmer Palette

The Narmer Palette is one of the world's oldest historical documents, recording the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt by conquest under King Narmer more than 5,000 years ago. The Narmer Palette is also the great historical icon of the origin of Egypt as a nation. At the Cairo Museum, it's the first thing you see when you walk into the entry hall. Also called the Great Palette of Hierankopolis, where it was found, the images on the palette are the subject of volumes of commentary and interpretation.

At 10 inches high this cold-cast resin replica is a little less than one-half the size of the actual Palette. Mounted on its marble base the overall height of the palette replica is 11.5 inches. The accuracy and detail of images on the replica are excellent.

Palettes were used to grind and mix the ingredients of cosmetics, which were applied not only for facial and body decoration but also as insect repellent, sunscreen, and medicine. The practice of ornamenting palettes developed in pre- Dynastic times, and their hard stone survives well. The Narmer Palette is rather large for actual use, and the ornamentation does not leave a grinding space, so it seems clear it was intended only as a ceremonial or presentation object.
