The official Egyptian version of the battle says Ramesses saved the day single-handed, personally slaying hundreds of Hittites. Certainly an exaggeration, if not a fantasy. Historians generally interpret the battle as a draw, but at the end of the day Ramesses' forces must have held the field. Ramesses had led his expedition into Hittite territory, and the Hittites certainly would have slaughtered the Egyptians if they had not been forced to withdraw to fortified positions. He did not have enough forces to take Kadesh, so Ramesses also withdrew, leaving the battle with no clear victor. But from this inconclusive battle came the first recorded peace treaty.
