Ramesses II Rides to Battle in His Chariot

Statuette shows Ramesses II, known as "Ramesses the Great", riding to battle in his chariot. The sculpture is based on one of the many scenes of the Battle of Kadesh shown on Ramesses' temples. Painted cold-cast resin diorama is 10.5 inches long and 8.5 inches tall.

The official Egyptian version of the battle says Ramesses saved the day single-handed, personally slaying hundreds of Hittites. Certainly an exaggeration, if not a fantasy. Historians generally interpret the battle as a draw, but at the end of the day Ramesses' forces must have held the field. Ramesses had led his expedition into Hittite territory, and the Hittites certainly would have slaughtered the Egyptians if they had not been forced to withdraw to fortified positions. He did not have enough forces to take Kadesh, so Ramesses also withdrew, leaving the battle with no clear victor. But from this inconclusive battle came the first recorded peace treaty.
