Scarab Jewelry Box

Rectangular box with a hinged lid is decorated with lotuses and a winged scarab beetle. The box is of painted cold-cast resin, 6.5 inches square.

The scarab beetle is a benevolent symbol of the sun and of life eternal. The female dung beetle (scarab beetle) forms a ball of dung and rolls it across the ground to a selected location, where she buries it. Weeks later mature dung beetles emerge from the ground and fly away. Ancient Egyptians saw this cycle as a parallel to the daily path of the sun across the sky from east to west, then through the underworld to rise again in the east the next morning. Both sun and scarab modelled the human expectation of rebirth following death and the trials of the underworld.

Stuffe & Nonsense Egyptian figurines and collectibles are modern manufactured decorative objects, made in the style of ancient Egyptian artifacts.
