Scribe was a position of honor and respect in ancient Egypt. The position was partly hereditary, as only those of proper family could receive the lengthy education to become a scribe competent in hieroglyphs and hieratic. Even administrators of high station would have sculptures of themselves as scribes to emphasize their learning.
