When you see lions in a zoo, they're pretty much always asleep. But they breed prolifically in captivity -- they're not depressed. Even in the wild, lions sleep about 20 hours a day. If you want to see zoo lions awake, check on the feeding schedule. They wake up for their priority events. I've read that the big cats sleep so much as an energy-saving strategy. Big mammalian predators can only catch so much food, and can't afford wasting energy between meals. It sounds like a very sensible explanation, but our house-cats sleep about 18 hours a day and they're neither large predators nor short on food.
