Ringtails are procyonids, like raccoons and coatimundi. They inhabit rocky, forested areas in the southwest United States and northern Mexico.
The ringtail is also called a "miner's cat". They don't really domesticate, but they do habituate to people and it's easy to get them to hang around a place if they get fed occasionally. Miners would keep them around camps or cabins to help control vermin.
