Stuffe & Nonsense are no longer operating and cannot accept orders. Pages for the plush figures we made are still online for reference. If you bought from us in the past, Thank You! We hope you have enjoyed the soft sculpture art.

The Gryphon is a fabulous animal: front half eagle and back half lion. They're also spelled griffen, griffin or griffon as well as gryphon, but they're all the same beast. The Stuffe & Nonsense Gryphon is 20 inches tall, made of synthetic plush with fiberfill and plastic bead and rope stuffing. The beak is leather; the feet heavy wool felt over a wire frame. Wings are jointed, so they can pivot and pose but not flap.

There is also a smaller gryphon available. It's only about 12 inches tall and looks much the same as its larger cousin. Just eats a little less, takes a little less space, and costs a little less ($175). Since griffons are already mythical, we happily do other bird/cat combinations to make some very nice alternative gryphons. The Snow Gryphon is a combination of Snowy Owl and Snow Leopard. The Raven-Panther Gryphon is a combination of a (very large) Raven and a Black Jaguar.

Gryphons come to us through Greek legends, but the Egyptians had them, too.

Egyptian Axex Here's a rendering of an Egyptian-style griffin. The "axex" label is odd, as that seems to be the Egyptian word for "darkness". This picture came from a Dover book, and I have not been able to locate the source of the reference. It illustrates a couple of the major differences that show up in depictions of gryphons: the front feet and the ears. Gryphons are sometimes rendered with cat front feet instead of eagle front feet. Since it is well known that gryphons can fly down and carry off sheep, they must have a raptor's talons. Eagles don't have external ears, but some gryphons have donkey ears (representing their great speed).

There is a great concise natural history of gryphons at the Gryphon's Guild "Gryphon Origins" page. In more recent appearances, Alice talked with a Gryphon in Wonderland (he took her to see the Mock Turtle). And the wonderful Tenniel drawing of a gryphon from the Alice book has been turned into a sculpture from White Winds.

There is a nice list of griffin sites at "The Dragon Stone" mythical creature page.

Stuffe & Nonsense stuffed animals are soft sculpture artist original designs, individually hand crafted in California by the Stuffe Staff. Due to medical issues and other priorities, we no longer make our own stuffed animals. If you already have one of our toys, we hope you treasure it.

The animals were constructed of mohair, wool, alpaca or high-quality synthetic fur. We have been accused of taxidermy, but be assured that all of our animals are fake! They are stuffed mainly with polyetheylene fiberfill; we may use glass or plastic beads to add weight. Faces are needle-sculpted for detailed shaping.

Stuffe & Nonsense Stuffemals often use glass eyes or include small costume parts and are not generally recommended for young children. If you do want one of our stuffemals for a small child, be sure to state so when ordering. Then we can be sure to use only safety eyes and avoid any problematic parts or materials.

Stuffe & Nonsense is an artisan business and every figure is an individual creation. We do not have a large inventory of materials, the available plush and fabrics vary, and we do adjust patterns to improve shape or details from time to time. We will sometimes have stuffemals on hand but will more likely need to make your figure on order. Completion time for stuffemal orders is usually 2 to 8 weeks, though it can take longer if we're busy and you're not in a hurry. This business is run in our so-called spare time so work hours are subject to extreme variation.
