One normally thinks of a canopic jar as one of the four funerary jars used to store internal organs of the deceased during mummification. Actually the term originally described ceramic jars with lids in the form of human heads, which were found in great numbers around the town of Canopus where they were used in ceremonies honoring Osiris. Early Egyptologists called the jars "canopic" and the term was later extended to the funerary containers. So the Anubis ceramic jar is "canopic" because the lid is modelled in the form of a head. A funerary canopic jar with a jackal head on it would represent Duamutef, one of the sons of Horus. We do have replicas of Duamutef funerary canopic jars.
