These nested mummy cases are like the innermost two coffins that held the mummy of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. King Tut's mummy was placed inside three nested mummy cases, each more richly decorated than the one before. The mummy cases were inside a quartzite sarcophagus, which was inside four nested shrines. The large outermost shrine nearly filled the burial chamber in KV62. It took Howard Carter's team years to disassemble and extract all the nested boxes. The work involved in assembling them in the small burial chamber initially was remarkable.
