The lid is decorated with the udjat or "Eye of Horus", a powerful symbol of protection used to ward off disease. The udjat shows the left eye of Horus as a stylized combination of a human eye and a hawk eye. The udjat is normally the left eye because that was the eye wounded by Set but restored by Isis (or Thoth, the stories vary).
