Khons Egyptian God, Golden

The box says it's a statue of Horus, but this figurine shows the Egyptian god Khonsu as a falcon-headed man. His lunar headdress identifies Khonsu, showing the disk of a full moon cradled in a crescent moon. Compare the headdress on the figure of Khonsu as a young man. Horus is the best-known falcon god, but there were many other gods who could be represented by a falcon or by a falcon-headed man. Quite a few of them became identified with Horus, but Khonsu was a sufficiently powerful deity to remain separate. As a lunar deity, Khonsu was more closely associated with Thoth than with Horus. Gold-plated pewter figurine is 3.5 inches tall.

Khonsu was an ancient moon god with varying associations over the centuries. In Old Kingdom texts he was a slayer for the king. By the New Kingdom, Khonsu was a relatively benign figure, the son of Amun and Mut, together constituting the Theban Triad. The temple complex at Karnak includes a substantial temple to Khonsu. As a lunar deity he was also associated with Thoth and with the passage of time. Khonsu's temporal responsibility was grave, as he was Khonsu heseb-ahau, "Khonsu, decider of the life span".
